Happy 76th Birthday

When Frank Sinatra was old and near death he had a birthday. His family asked him "What do you want for your birthday?" He said, "Another one".

Two Nice Pictures Of Rachel Stewart

Opening Day At Nationals Park Some Years Ago.  It was very cold that day. I heard a beer vendor calling out "Warm beer! Warm beer!".

A very nice picture of Rachel smiling on our back porch

July 4th 2011 At Deep Creek Lake Maryland

I went with Charlie to get the whole hog that was 5 feet long and weighed 127 pounds. We went to the Butcher's outside Oakland, Maryland. They brought it out on a pulley and wrapped it in plastic and put it in the back of Charlie's SUV.
Back at his house we put the whole hog in a refrigerator in his garage. We stood him straight up.
He was cooked the next day for 7 hours over a wood fire and a motor driven turning spit.

On Sat. we saw a strange green paint like slick moving down the lake. It was bright green.
Rick swam out and brought back a small plastic bottle. The green dye had come from that small plastic bottle and made a bright green streak over 40 yards long. Charlie told us that fishermen use that green dye to dip their worms in and it makes them bright under water.

I came in the house one time on Sat. and in the living room everyone under the age of 50 was on some kind of electronic device. Cell phones, laptops. i pads, etc. One woman was on her laptop and cellphone at the same time and later I saw her doing the same thing while walking down two flights of steps from the deck to the ground which was also rocky and uneven.
Two teenage girls were sitting side by side on a couch with the their laptops open.
An middle aged man asked them "Are you two emailing each other so no one will know what you are talking about?"
They made no reply.

Swain's Lock And Rachel Stewart

"Swains Lock is one of my favorite places. It is quiet, yet relatively close to Great Falls. The canal here is usually full of water and the upper lock gate and the waste weir still function. Beside it sits an old lockhouse, which, up until the 1990s, was home to the Swains, one of the last of the canal families. What a beautiful place to grow up or just to visit.
I love the way the ground at Swains Lock slopes gently down toward the river. Huge oaks and sycamores shade a small campground and several picnic tables. In the spring, bluebells, trilliums, toothworts, and spring beauties blossom beneath them."

Swain's Lockhouse Restoration
The Friends have joined with the C&O Canal Trust, the C&O Canal Association and the National Park Service in a $300,000 project to restore Swain's lockhouse at Lock 21 of the canal. The lockhouse is in dire need of structural and architectural repairs in order to preserve the building. The restored lockhouse will be used for three purposes: a lockhouse in the Trust's Canal Quarters program; a part of the Canal Classrooms education program; and occasionally for exhibits by local photographers and artists.

Funds raised by the Friends and the Association are targeted to furnishing the restored lockhouse and building a lockkeeper's shanty next to the lock, just as when the canal was operational.

The fundraising by the Friends and the Association effort is being done in memory of Rachel Stewart who passed away in 2014. Rachel was a member of the Friends and a long time member of the Association, having served as its President for three terms. To date the Friends and the Association have raised over $10,500 towards our goal of $25,000.
