August 20th 1962 The Happiest Day Of My Life

The day we were released from active duty after the Berlin Crisis was the happiest day of my life. That was 54 years ago on August 20th,1962.
Now to prepare for this momentous occasion my friend Tommy Harvey who also was being released from active duty that day made a gallon jug of what he called "Yucca Flats". Yucca Flats according to Tommy Harvey is made this way: One quart of good vodka, 7 lemons, 7 Seven Ups,combined in a glass gallon jug with a top on it. Leave alone for 7 days and then take the top off. Boom! Yucca Flats. That is what we had to drink that night after we were released from active duty. I remember after it was all gone sucking the last of the juice out of the lemons left inside the bottle. Maybe I even ate the lemons.

I know I slept real well that night and the next morning woke up a free man. I got my stuff together and got out of Meridian as fast as I could.

My favorite band.
 Pete Fountain is gone but the torch has been passed to a new generation in New Orleans. There is a great rebirth of the original jazz and blues going on in New Orleans. And Tuba Skinny is by far the best of the new young bands. Shaye Cohn and Erika Lewis make beautiful music together.

Pete opened his club on Bourbon Street in 1959. In March of 1965 Rachel and I moved into 627 Ursulines Avenue in the French Quarter in New Orleans. The building was owned at that time by Pete Fountain. It was(and is)called The Trianon. The name is spelled out in tiles in front of the entrance. We were on the top floor with a balcony in the front and a deck in the back that looked out toward the Mississippi River.
I always considered Pete Fountain and Al Hirt the old guard but they were the kings of New Orleans for many many years. Pete has a toupee on in this video. He decided to get rid of it and go topless.
