I know someone going on this journey. He and his wife are leaving today mid day from Dulles International Airport outside of Washington D.C. They will fly to Dallas Texas and change planes for the 13 hour flight to Santiago Chile.

Now I can see what was only dark to me when my 10 year old son and I rode on this back in 1980.
The two videos of the ride in the posts below this one show what this ride is like in the dark. Terrifying because it was dark and I couldn't see anything. You will have to imagine the shaking and being thrown side to side and up and down since it is a roller coaster. I still dont understand the concept of this ride. Why is it inside a structure and why is it dark? I thought I was going to have a heart attack since I didn't know what was going on. I guess it is supposed to be scary. Well it is.

I went on this ride in 1980 with my son who was 10 years old at the time.
I had no idea what the ride was all about. I did not know what I was getting into.
I did not know it was a roller coaster. Or if I did I thought it would be a mild experience.
It was anything but that. I was terrified. It was mostly dark all the way through as I remember so I had no idea of what was happening. It felt like I might have a heart attack.
I think when we got off he wanted to go again. Maybe he did. I didn't.

I was in Bayou Bakery last Sunday and David was making a large bowl of grits. Then he put something on top of it. I asked him what it was and he said, "Grits and Grillades(pronounced Gree-yahds).
I said, "That looks good". So I decided to look it up on the web.

I thought I knew something about Southern Cooking and Louisiana and New Orleans cooking but it turns out I know almost nothing. Well almost nothing. I do know how to make some terrific grits at home. I like my grits straight(truegrits) not with shrimp or cheese. Just straight grits and maybe some salt and pepper and butter.

etta james I'd Rather Go Blind

My old friend Jim Fuhrman just told me about this song. Jim is the guy who first got me started listening to really good R&B and Blues when we were freshmen in college.
I had heard good R&B and Rock and Roll in high school like all kids listening to WLAC in Nashville.
But Jim got me onto people like Robert Pete Williams and blues artists. People like Muddy Waters and all the great Chicago blues men like Howling Wolf.
We listened to a lot of real good honky tonk country also. People like Ernest Tubb and early Johnny Cash and the original Jimmie Rodgers who was from Meridian Mississippi. And the immortal Hank Williams Sr.

Years later I would learn that Bob Dylan up in Hibbing Minnesota was soaking up the same sounds. But his main influences were Hank Williams and Little Richard. Put those two together and you get Bob Dylan.

In his book Chronicles Bob Dylan tells how he wore out a copy of the Hank Williams as LUKE THE DRIFTER album.
We had a copy of that album in our frat house in 1958. It was so strange I played it over and over and over. It is pure undiluted Hank Williams. Songs so sad and sorrowful and full of pity that he had to put it out under a different name than Hank Williams. It came out as being from Luke The Drifter. Hank Williams name was not on it.

We had two other albums that made a large impression on me: DOWN AND OUT by Sonny Boy Williamson(including the songs I AINT FATTING NO MORE FROGS FOR SNAKES and DONT START ME TALKING) and LONELY STREET by Kitty Wells.

Well I finally found this song and her version of it on Youtube.

This is the song that William Eggleston blasted into my ears over the phone late one night in 1971. Click on the label William Eggleston in the Labels box below to read all about it. Walter Hopps had called me around midnight from Memphis. We were living in Mobile at that time. Walter wanted Eggleston to meet me over the phone. Walter and William Eggleston were both feeling the effects of alcohol. A lot of alcohol.
The first thing Eggleston said was, "Listen to this M-F".
I listened to some loud singing coming over the phone.

Then Eggleston said , "Do you know who is singing this song M-F?" He repeated that over and over. I thought maybe it was Ruth Brown or Sister Rosetta Tharpe. But it was Etta James. Also known as Peaches and Miss Peaches.
Indeed in 1971 many strange things were happening every day. And they still are.

I went and visited with them every day last week.
Really enjoyed meeting and talking with them. Great group of guys.

I have just discovered Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey. The Sanibel Spirits Liquor store at Jerry's Shopping Area on Sanibel Island had a little basket near the cash register filled with miniatures of this honey flavored liqueur. 1.39 cents each. I bought one and liked it so much just poured over ice that I went back and bought 5 more.

It is mild and smooth and reminds me somewhat of something from New Orleans called Pecan Praline Liqueur.
Both of these liqueurs are good poured over vanilla ice cream.

The tops of the little bottles have a honey bee picture on them.

The store clerk told me and showed me that Tennessee Honey is also available in larger bottles.

When we moved to Kirbyville, Texas in the summer of 1952 the first place we went was called Lea's Cafe downtown in Kirbyville. Kirbyville's downtown was only about 3 or 4 blocks long on Main Street.
Leas's Cafe was a good choice because as I remember it was "hot as the dickens" and they served ice tea in the largest glasses I had ever seen before or since.

Later when I went in that restaurant I would see the old East Texas men sipping their coffee out of the saucers. This I had never seen before East of the Mississippi River. They would pour the hot coffee in the saucer and then blow on it to cool it off. Then it was saucered and blowed and cool enough for drinking.

Here is an obituary of the owner of Cooper's Cafe which became Lea's Cafe.

"Lea, Roy G.
Funeral services for Roy G. Lea, 59, of Kirbyville was held Friday at Causey�s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home with Paul Bailey, Church of Christ minister, officiating. Interment was in Kirbyville Cemetery. Pallbearers were J.B. Sanders, B.C. Woods, James Bateman, Jeptha Stark, C.B. Herndon and O.L. Smith. Mr. Lea died at his home at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, 1979 after a sudden illness. He was a native of Simpson, La., and was reared by his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Cooper, after the death of his parents. He owned and operated the Cooper or Lea Cafe for 26 years. He was presently employed at the Texaco Security Guard. He was a veteran with five years service during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Prevost Lea of Kirbyville; two daughters, Sherry Matthews of Lumberton and Maggie Accord of Kirbyville; two sons, Robert G. Lea and James Lea, both of Kirbyville; two sisters, Ferrelle Rischard of Kirbyville and Theda Walters of Port Neches; a brother, Weldon Cooper of Charlottesville, Va.; and five grandchildren."

At another cafe in Kirbyville, Texas I ordered a hot dog. It was served on a place covered in chilli and I was given a fork with which to eat it.

I kind of like the idea of coffee being served in real cups and real saucers.

Now most places only use styrofoam coffee cups(McDonald's wraps the styrofoam cup in paper on the outside of the styrofoam) with plastic tops on them. The rationale is that it keeps the coffee hot longer and it also allows people to take it out and drink from the cup in their cars.
But as someone else has noted there are far too many people walking around drinking out of paper and styrofoam cups. I think it was Nora Ephron who wrote that.

Also the younger generation are not all drinking coffee any more. Some of them drink Diet Coke for breakfast. Incredible but true.

Little do they know that WW2 was won by(among other things) our soldiers drinking black coffee and smoking cigarettes.
I gave up cigarettes in 1969 but I still drink coffee. Most times I drink it black but sometimes I will add milk and sugar.

As for ice tea with lemon it is a great summer drink. In 1964 I was hitch hiking to New York with Jack Newell and when we got to Meridian in June of that year it was really hot. We went in the Davis Grill and I ordered iced tea. Jack asked me why I ordered iced tea. To him the only drink to have at that time was a beer.
Many years later Jack gave up alcholic drinks in all forms.
But nobody ever gives up iced tea.

The Book House..The Last Bookstore Or The Last Little Independent Bookstore In Arlington, Virginia

As far as I know The Book House is the last little independent bookstore in Arlington, Va. All the rest have closed down and just do business via the internet.
I have seen Ed Hughes around for years at booksales, garage sales, estate sales, library sales, etc. He is very quiet and in apparently great shape for someone who is 91 years old.
The Book House is small and in an out of the way place. I have been in there a few times over the last 20 years or so. I have never seen anyone in there except for the owner Natalie Hughes.

I was up early this morning before daybreak. I went for a walk to a higher elevation to get a better look at this spectacular sunrise that was happening around 7:10 a.m.
The bright red color before the sun came up was being reflected off the overhead clouds making for a special sunrise. The kind people see every day in Florida but not so often around Washington D.C.

It used to be after they removed the old pissoirs it was hard to find a place to pee for free in Paris. There were pay toilets in or near the Metro stations. And if you went in a bar or restaurant to use the bathroom you were expected to buy something. I think they had pay toilets in the McDonalds.

Now there are free Sanisettes. They started out as pay toilets but now the city has made them all free.
But you may have to stand in line and wait as people can use them for up to 20 minutes. So the line outside backs up and some people give up and walk off.

The Last Old Time Public Urinal Or Pissoir Left In Paris France Outside La Sante Prison on Boulevard Arago

This is the last of the old time urinals in Paris France. It is on the Boulevard Arago near The La Sante Prison. Click on the photo to enlarge it.
I remember using these in Paris when I was there in the summer of 1964. They were easy to use. I miss them because they were a bit of the old time Paris. There is only one left now but it is still in use. I am glad they left one. I went to Google maps and got a street view of Blvd. Arago by the La Sante Prison and after looking up and down the street found the last old time pissoir and was able to see it clearly via Google street view.

Ace Of Hearts In The Snow And Ice In Chicago March 1965

I asked Rachel to take a picture of this Ace of Hearts card frozen in ice in Chicago in March of 1965 when we were going to the train station to leave for New Orleans. Chicago was bitterly cold but when we arrived in New Orleans it was very warm and the azaleas were in bloom. We had to take our coats off.

I had always wished this photo had been taken in color so as to show the Ace Of Hearts in Color contrasted with the white ice which is what caught my eye in the first place.
So this morning I printed a copy of the black and white photo and colored the card red and then scanned it.

#1: It is what fox hunters yell when they see the fox.
#2: It is what Royal Air Force pilots used to yell when they saw a German plane in WW2.
#3: It is what we would say when we lived in East Texas in Kirbyville in 1952 to 1955 and we had a young filly named Tally. We would mount up and say Tally Ho! That is why this blog is named Tally Ho!

I guess the good people of Leesburg, Va. in Loudon County Virginia have never heard of the separation of church and state. And if they have they don't understand what it means.

The Last Picture Show

The Last Barbershop.

When we lived in Kirbyville, Texas in 1952/53/54/55 the town had

a population of 1444. We left and they then had 1400 people.

I seem to remember the town had 5 barber shops. I also remember a blacksmith shop. Long gone.

There was nothing much to do in Kirbyville back then but go down town and watch them cut hair. And maybe see a train carrying pulpwood pass through town.

In 1954 I once lay down on the top of this building and ate mulberries off the tree that grew

overhead. I think of it as a Huckleberry Finn Mark Twain type memory.

My memory of this place from 1952-53-54 is of a

brightly lit top flight hardware store. I bought rope there for calf roping. I remember they had

ropes for sale in all sizes. This store had a great smell of leather and wood as I remember.

I hate Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has killed off the old main streets of many small towns in America. What once had thriving main streets filled with businesses and Mom and Pop stores are now deserted and have become ghost towns because of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart moves in and wipes out all stores large and small in a 50 mile radius.
And young people don't even know what a mom and pop store is. They look puzzled and say, "What's a mom and pop store?"

I saw Sam yesterday. He told me about this article that had been written about him.

There is much more to Sam than appears in the article above. Sam is very clear headed and very intelligent. He doesn't use alcohol or drugs. Pan handling and playing his uke down at Union Station in Washington, D.C. is his job. That is what he calls it. He told me that he will have to work on Thanksgiving. The take is very good this time of year. The day before Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving are prime days for panhandling. Same for the days before Christmas and Christmas day.

I suggested to Sam that he panhandle and play his uke outside the metro station at the baseball stadium. That worked out very well also.

When I first met Sam he was sleeping outside in the winter in a sleeping bag at a bustop outside of McDonald's in Arlington, Va.
He would come inside in the morning and sit in a booth a appear to be sleeping. Finally he was told to leave because he smelled so bad.
But he has cleaned up and that manager has left and he is no longer banned from that McDonald's. But he spends most of his time outside Central Library in Arlington on weekends and goes to his job at Union Station during the week.

Recently some social service agency found him a room in N.E. D.C. where he can sleep this winter.

I have written about Sam before on this blog. Below is what I have written before about Sam Kosko.

I have a friend here named Sam who plays the ukulele. He is homeless and plays his ukulele and also pan handles down at the train station in D.C. Union station is a good place to pan handle even though someone stole his ukulele when he went to the bathroom even though he had asked someone to watch his stuff while he was gone.

I was told he did right well the two days before Christmas panhandling outside Union Station. He got 180 dollars each day. $360.00 for two days is not bad. Some gave him 5 dollars some gave him ten dollars and even a few twenties. Churches took up collections and put them in envelopes. The little children would put their one dollars or so in also. Then someone would deliver the envelopes to Sam and hand them to him.

Sam has dirty clothes and long hair. He really looks the part. He also has a sad expression on his face. Very rarely does he look people in the eye. He keeps his head and eyes lowered. Sam is a very smart well educated person. He has worked before but now he lives on the street. He keeps his possessions in a storage unit. He pays for the storage unit each month but does not have an apartment or a room. The homeless in Arlington get food every day from local churches. They had a Christmas meal from 2pm to 4pm yesterday at a church here in Arlington. Sam was there I was told by someone this morning.

Sam has been banned from several places where he would go to get warm. One of them is the library. They have a rule that you cannot sleep in the library. They warn the sleepers once and then ban them the next time they catch them sleeping.

I first saw Sam last year sleeping out in the cold in a bus shelter. He would sleep in his sleeping bag all night and then later come in the McDonald's and go sit quietly in a booth and go to sleep. They let him do this for a long time. I finally went over and struck up a conversation with him. I was surprised to find he was so well read and well educated. And he has talent also. He is quite good on the ukulele and is a good singer as well.

But the people that come in McDonald's finally complained that he smelled bad and he was told to leave and not come back. So he stayed outside in the cold.

Last year there was also a woman who slept out there in the bus stop shelters. She finally drove Sam away because she would not stick to one shelter. She kept moving back and forth to the one across the street and leaving a big mess which Sam said attracted rats. So he left and now sleeps somewhere down near the Central Library. He takes to metro into Union Station each day and comes back in the evening.

I went looking for him today down by the library but he was not there. I feel he must be down at Union Station doing his thing.

Babe Stovall - The Ship Is At The Landing

I used to see and hear Babe Stovall playing around the French Quarter in New Orleans when I lived there in 1965 and 1966 and when I went back on visits in the 1970s.

Once in 1971 or so I was on Madison Street in the French Quarter very early in the morning when it was just daylight and no one was on the streets. I saw Babe Stovall rounding the corner on Chartres Street and said "Hi Babe". He must have been up all night playing a house party. He said "How're you doin?" I told him I was tired. He asked how old I was. I said I was 31. He said, "When I was 31 I could piss over the tops of these buildings". And off he went. I have never forgotten his remark. Thanks Babe.

I am surprised someone hasn't written a time travel novel about the JFK assassination before this one. Maybe they have and I just don't know about it. I suppose many people have thought of writing a book about going back and trying to stop the assassination from happening.

If you did go back in time trying to stop the JFK assassination would be like a nightmare. The Secret Service would not believe you if you told them. They would just arrest you. And you could not get to the grassy knoll and the 6th Floor of the Texas Book Depository both at the same time.

Many unexpected things could happen to keep you stuck somewhere like in a dream making it unable for you to get to the scene on time.

If you tried to get the Secret Service not to take the bubble top off the limo they would ignore you since it was JFK that told them to take it off that day.

And certainly one good way to end the book would be for you to be shot by the Secret Service while attempting to stop the assassination. They could then get rid of your body and history could continue unchanged.

They were always well behaved and never caused any trouble. They would drive down from New York City where they lived and check in the Washington Plaza Hotel when they had a gig in D.C.
But I do remember the last time they came they arrived with bullet holes in their car. Seems they had a shoot out on the way down. Nobody was hurt. I think they had to uphold a reputation as a bunch of bad rappers.

Joe Frazier just died. He was 67 years old. I got his autograph when I worked at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C. in August 1976.
He was there for a big World Boxing Association Event. Howard Cosell was the M.C. More than a 1000 people came to the event held in the large Regency Ballroom. Every single living heavy weight champion was there except George Foreman. The ones who came that I remember were Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Jersey Joe Walcott, Ken Norton and Floyd Patterson.
I saw all these champions lined up in the hallway outside of the Regency Ballroom waiting to go in.

The above photo is of a young Joe Frazier.
I got Ali's autograph in the Lobby of the Shoreham Hotel the next day. He was standing in the Lobby all alone. No one else was around. I said, "Hi Champ. Can I have your autograph?" He signed his name on a small piece of paper which I handed to him. Then I said "I saw you had your picture taken with Bob Dylan." He nodded yes.

The night of the event after it was over I saw Joe Frazier sitting with two pretty young women one on each side of him on a couch in the hallway off the lobby. I went up to him and said hello. I told him my daughter has asked me to get his autograph for her. I told him I had told her I was going to get Ali's autograph and my daughter said "Get Joe Frazier's autograph too". The two women both said "Yes". I got Joe 's autograph and gave it to my daughter.
Howard Cosell was a great M.C. for the event. He joked and traded insults with Ali. Cosell told Ali "I knew you when you were a kid in Louisville,Ky. stealing bicycles".

This ferry runs from the west end of Gulf Shores near the old Civil War Fort Morgan over to the east end of Dauphin Island near where the old Civil War Fort Gaines is located.

The Boy With A Bumble Bee On A String---Young Art Collector Had a Bumblebee Tied On A String Attached To His Shirt

Have you ever seen a person with a bumblebee tied on a string attached to their shirt? I did back in 1969. The young art collector mentioned in Paul Richard's Review in the Washington Post of the very first ever exhibit of underground original comic art in a major museum was the person with a bumblebee for a pet.
See my blog post below this one for information on that show and to read Paul Richard's two reviews of that show. The show of underground comic art was at The Washington Gallery of Modern Art in May of 1969.

I will not name the young collector since I want to protect his privacy.
   He bought some art by Gilbert Shelton. I know he bought the Billy Graham and the Dope Mystics(see it it in the post just below this one) because I saw it in his home. He showed it to me. Paul Richard writes that he bought a Wonder Wart Hog original by Gilbert Shelton also.

After the show this young man called me up and wanted to come into D.C. to see me.He lived nearby in Arlington, Va. I remember he also invited me to his home and showed me slides of pictures he had taken in Antarctica. He projected the images on a large movie type screen.
They were professional quality photographs of ice he had taken on some assignment.

When he came into D.C. he had a bumblebee on a string attached to a button on his shirt. It flew around and around. He explained to me that he had taken the stinger out of his pet bumblebee.
I see by looking at Youtube there are several people who have put bumblebees on strings and filmed the bees flying around. They seem to think it is funny.

For lunch he told me he could only eat hamburgers from a place like Burger King where the meat was flame broiled.

Then we went to a small museum or gallery of African Art. Standing in the front room of an old D.C. townhouse we began to look at the art on the walls. He bent over to pick up something and a pistol fell out of his coat. I heard something hit the highly polished blond hardwood floor. I looked down to see a pistol spinning around and around.

   D.C. has some very strict gun laws. I think they were just as strict in 1969 as they are now. Guns are not allowed in D.C. Only criminals and the D.C. police can have them. Well, that is not exactly true anymore. Someone sued over this law recently and through a very complicated and difficult process people can obtain a license for a gun. But back then I don't think they could.
   I suggested we leave the gallery after he picked up his gun.

Pan Am Flight Bag 1960s Style And Pan Am Holiday Junket To San Juan

I used to have one of these. I went looking for it yesterday and today and could not find it.
The originals are now selling on Ebay from 40 to 100 dollars or more.
Here is one that is part of a Western Auto Junket to San Juan in the 1960s including the bag and much more.

I met a 89 year old man this morning who went on one of these junkets on Pan Am to the Caribbean back in the 1960s when they were introducing jet air travel.
He won the trip in a contest. He said he went to the airport and they flew down to the Caribbean and got off and he went and got drunk and then later they returned to the airport and flew home.
