My favorite band.
 Pete Fountain is gone but the torch has been passed to a new generation in New Orleans. There is a great rebirth of the original jazz and blues going on in New Orleans. And Tuba Skinny is by far the best of the new young bands. Shaye Cohn and Erika Lewis make beautiful music together.

Where is Erika?

We've been getting this question a lot lately, and we figured we owe those inquiring an explanation. Erika has moved out of New Orleans, but she is still in the band. She will still be performing with Tuba Skinny at festivals and on tours, and occasionally in New Orleans too. She'll be playing with us in New Orleans in April. We miss her when she's not with us, but when we do get to play with her, it's a special treat. Thanks for your concern.

Tuba Skinny Finally Gets On Nick Spitzer's Show American Routes Because Of Robert Crumb

I have been trying for 6  years to get Nick Spitzer to put Tuba Skinny on his radio show American Routes.org(also available on line on the computer) to no avail even though they live in his own back yard in New Orleans. So I was surprised they finally made it on his show but only because they visited Robert Crumb in France and played their music for him and he plays their music for Nick Spitzer in this weeks show on American Routes.

Tuba Skinny in New Orleans And As For Me I Was Born Too Soon

We all know people who think they were born too late. I am beginning to think I
was born too soon.
When we lived in New Orleans in 1965 and 1966 there were no street bands like
Tuba Sknny playing in and around the French Quarter.
I first went to New Orleans in 1955 and was in an out of there off and on through
1980. Never did I ever see any street bands like Tuba Skinny and the others that
can now be found on the streets and the clubs in and around the French Quarter
and on Youtube.

Apparently they all appeared in the years after Hurricane Katrina.
Tuba Skinny was formed in 2009 and I have been following them on Youtube
ever since.  They have now been together 3 years. They play in and around New
Orleans in the winter months. In the summer they take off for Europe Jazz Festivals
and then return to play summer gigs in New England and in and around New York City.
Then they return to New Orleans in the Fall each year.

In 1965 and 1966 and on up into the 1980s the older traditional jazz musicians
were dying off or were already dead in New Orleans.
Now out of nowhere there have appeared young white musicians not just playing
traditional New Orleans jazz and blues but playing it exceedlingly well.
A miracle has happened. The torch has been passed to people like the singer for Tuba Skinny
Erika Lewis and the leader and cornet player of Tuba Skinny Shaye Cohn.

There is a new birth of jazz going on in New Orleans. It is being played by young muscians. I think
I was born too soon. But I am glad I lived long enough to see and hear it.

Erika Lewis and Tuba Skinny - Yellow Dog Blues (Easy Rider)

Erika Lewis belting the blues.
For some strange reason this band sounds best out on the street unamplified. I think Erika's voice is best heard unamplified.  And out on the street she can really open up and let it go all the way.
All the indoors videos are good but there is something about the sound outdoors that makes it sound even better.
   Also I get a kick out of watching the expressions of people passing by. Those who have ears and can hear and know this music stop and appreciate it. Those who don't know good music kind of slow down and keep walking and have a quizzical look on their faces like "What is that?"

Go to Youtube and read the comments about Shaye Cohn. This answers a lot about why this band is so good.
  According to the comments in the video shown above Shaye Cohn is the granddaughter of jazz musician Al Cohn. And she plays 4  instruments.  She is the driving force behind this band and now I know why they are so good. And Erika Lewis is something special as a jazz/blues singer.
